Sus elevaciones topográficas van desde el nivel del mar hasta elpáramosa 13.000 pies sobre el nivel del mar, alberga 9 tipos diferentes de ecosistemas.
Es la tercera región con mayor precipitación del mundo, vía clave para el intercambio zoogenético y vivero a las ballenas yubarta durante los meses de verano del hemisferio norte.
